IB Psychology Assessment Breakdown

Our IBO certified examiners know every mark allocation, command term, and grade boundary — because they’ve sat on the marking committees.

📝
Paper 1: Core Approaches
SL 50% / HL 40% · 2 hours

Section A: three short-answer questions (one per approach: Biological, Cognitive, Sociocultural), 8 marks each. Section B: one extended essay evaluating a core approach topic, 22 marks. Command terms: describe, explain, evaluate, contrast, discuss.

📊
Paper 2: Applied Options
SL 25% / HL 20% · 1h SL / 2h HL

SL: one question from one option (Abnormal, Developmental, Health, or Human Relationships). HL: two questions from two different options. Command terms: explain, evaluate, discuss, to what extent. Option choice shapes 25–30% of your final grade.

📖
Paper 3 — HL only: Qualitative Research
HL 20% · 1 hour

A novel qualitative research study is presented. Students answer structured questions on sampling strategy, reflexivity, ethical considerations, and methodological trustworthiness. Unlike Papers 1 and 2, content knowledge is secondary to research methodology literacy.

📋
Internal Assessment: Experimental Study
SL 25% / HL 20%

A replication of a published psychological study using an independent samples design. Includes directional or non-directional hypothesis, data collection, descriptive statistics, results, and a discussion of findings in relation to the original study. ~2,200 words.

IB Psychology Tutoring — Questions Answered

What are the three core approaches in IB Psychology?
The Biological approach examines how biological factors — neurotransmitters, hormones, genetics, evolution — shape behaviour and mental processes. The Cognitive approach investigates internal mental processes: memory models, schema theory, cognitive biases, decision-making. The Sociocultural approach explores how social context, group membership, cultural norms, and social learning influence behaviour. Every Paper 1 question draws on all three approaches. Our tutors teach you to apply each approach fluently, with the right studies and command-term responses.
How do I write the IB Psychology IA?
The Psychology IA is an experimental study replicating a published psychological experiment. You formulate a research question and directional or non-directional hypothesis, recruit participants using opportunity or volunteer sampling, collect quantitative data, and report using a formal report structure: Abstract, Introduction, Exploration, Analysis, Evaluation. Most students replicate a well-established cognitive study — Stroop effect, Loftus & Palmer, or a serial position effect variant. Our tutors guide you from replication design to statistical write-up.
Which Paper 2 option topic is best?
Abnormal Psychology is the most popular — it has well-defined content, strong marking traditions, and clear links back to the biological approach. Human Relationships suits students who found the sociocultural approach engaging. However, your school’s teaching often determines the most practical choice. We support all four options and help you create an option-specific study guide keyed to past-paper questions.
How is Paper 1 Section B extended essay marked?
Section B requires a 22-mark extended essay responding to a question about one core approach or a concept spanning multiple approaches. Top-mark responses state a clear thesis, integrate evidence from all three approaches where relevant, deploy studies precisely (methodology, findings, and limitations), and reach a genuine evaluative conclusion. Our tutors mark practice essays against the actual criteria and annotate them in exactly the way IBO examiners do.
What is Paper 3 (HL) and how should I prepare for it?
Paper 3 presents an unseen qualitative research study and asks structured questions about its methodology. Questions test understanding of sampling strategies (purposive, snowball, convenience), reflexivity (the researcher’s self-awareness about their influence on the study), ethical considerations (informed consent, debriefing, power dynamics), and trustworthiness criteria. Content knowledge from Papers 1 and 2 is largely irrelevant here — you need research methodology fluency. Our HL tutors run dedicated Paper 3 workshops using past papers.
How much content do I need to memorise in IB Psychology?
IB Psychology has a significant content load — roughly 12–15 key studies per core approach, plus option-specific studies. But content without application scores poorly. Our approach is to learn each study in context: what it found, how it was conducted, its methodological strengths and limitations, and how it can be used as evidence in an argument. Students who understand studies deeply memorise them more naturally and apply them more flexibly in exams.
