What IB Chemistry Examiners Actually Reward

The IB Chemistry course is assessed through written papers and an internally assessed investigation. Understanding the purpose and design of each component is the single biggest advantage a student can have — and what most private tutors do not teach explicitly.

Paper 1 — Multiple Choice (SL & HL)

Paper 1 is 30 questions (SL, 45 min) or 40 questions (HL, 60 min) using the IB Data Booklet throughout. Students lose marks not from lack of knowledge but from working too quickly, misreading unit prefixes (μ vs m vs k), or eliminating only two distractors instead of three. A trained elimination approach typically raises Paper 1 scores by 3–5 marks.

Paper 2 — Structured & Extended Response

Paper 2 opens with a compulsory data-based question testing scientific reasoning and graph interpretation. The extended-response questions in Section B are where command-term mastery is decisive. “Explain” requires a causal mechanism. “Deduce” expects a logical chain from given data. “Outline” needs precision — not an essay. Students who practise writing to the markscheme routinely score 5–8 marks higher in Paper 2.

Paper 3 — Option Topics (HL only)

HL students sit Paper 3 covering one of four option topics: Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Energy, or Materials. Most schools choose Medicinal Chemistry or Biochemistry. Our tutors integrate option topics into Year 2 revision from day one — not as a last-minute addition.

HL vs SL — What Actually Differs

What is the difference between IB Chemistry SL and HL?
IB Chemistry HL covers additional content in organic chemistry (reaction mechanisms, NMR spectroscopy, stereochemistry), d-block and transition metal chemistry (crystal field theory, complex ion formation), advanced reaction kinetics (Arrhenius equation, activation energy calculations), and a full option topic assessed in Paper 3. HL students also sit an additional paper (Paper 3) and face a larger weighting in Paper 2. The IA requirements are the same for both levels, but HL students are expected to demonstrate deeper analytical reasoning in their written responses.
How does the IB Chemistry Internal Assessment work?
The IA is an independently conducted laboratory investigation worth 20% (HL) or 25% (SL) of the final grade.
