IB Environmental Systems & Societies (ESS) Assessment Breakdown
Every mark allocation, command term, and grade boundary — from examiners who’ve sat on the marking committees.
One compulsory question based on an unseen case study relevant to ESS themes. Structured short-answer questions test ability to apply systems thinking, environmental concepts, and EVS (Environmental Value Systems) to a real-world scenario. Data interpretation and source evaluation are central. 1 hour.
Section A: 3–4 data-based short-answer questions covering any topic from the ESS course. Section B: two extended essay questions, each from a different topic area. Essays require evaluative conclusions, case study integration, and explicit engagement with environmental value systems. Command terms: evaluate, discuss, analyse, to what extent. 2 hours.
A 1,500-word individual investigation into an environmental issue using primary data. Students design a methodology, collect fieldwork data, process and analyse results using appropriate techniques, and draw conclusions evaluated against ESS theory. Assessed on: personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation, and communication.

Book a Session →What We Cover in IB Environmental Systems & Societies (ESS)
Every topic taught by IBO certified examiners who know exactly how marks are awarded.
Topic 1 — Foundations of ESS: systems thinking (inputs, outputs, feedback loops, emergent properties); Environmental Value Systems (ecocentric, anthropocentric, technocentric)
Topic 2 — Ecosystems and Ecology: energy flow, trophic levels, pyramids of numbers/biomass/energy; succession (primary and secondary); limiting factors
Topic 3 — Biodiversity, Conservation, Restoration: biodiversity indices (Simpson’s D); hotspots; IUCN Red List; conservation strategies (in situ vs ex situ); rewilding
Topic 4 — Water and Aquatic Food Production: hydrological cycle; freshwater access and scarcity; aquaculture vs capture fishery; marine protected areas
Topic 5 — Soil Systems and Terrestrial Food Production: soil formation and degradation; conventional vs organic farming; food miles; agroforestry; desertification
Topic 6 — Atmospheric Systems: greenhouse effect; enhanced greenhouse effect; ozone depletion; acid deposition; photochemical smog
Topic 7 — Climate Change and Energy Production: IPCC scenarios; renewable vs non-renewable energy; carbon capture; energy access equity
Topic 8 — Human Systems and Resource Use: ecological footprint; carrying capacity; Malthusian theory; SDGs; circular economy; environmental legislation
Systems diagrams: drawing and evaluating systems models (Causal Loop Diagrams, stock-and-flow models)
Environmental Value Systems (EVS): applying ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric frameworks to real case studies
IA investigation design: primary data collection methods (transects, quadrats, water quality testing); statistical analysis (t-test, chi-squared, Simpson’s D)
Case studies: Amazon deforestation, Aral Sea, Maldives sea level, GM crops, Oslo carbon tax — applied to all 8 topic areas
