IB Global Politics Assessment Breakdown
Every mark allocation, command term, and grade boundary — from examiners who’ve sat on the marking committees.
Structured questions (Section A: short-answer, Section B: extended response) based on an unseen contemporary political stimulus. Tests ability to apply political concepts to real-world situations, identify assumptions and perspectives, and evaluate arguments. Command terms: identify, explain, analyse, evaluate. 1h15m. SL 30% / HL 20%.
Two extended essay questions answered from a choice organised around the five core units: Power Sovereignty & International Relations; Human Rights & Political Justice; Development & Sustainability; Peace & Conflict; and Identity Globalisation & Culture. Requires synthesis across units and genuine political analysis. 1h30m SL / 2h30m HL.
A school-based political engagement project. Students participate in a real political process or activity, document it in a portfolio (1,500–2,000 word written account), and reflect on political concepts experienced firsthand. Assessed on understanding of political concepts, engagement quality, and reflective analysis.
Students explore a contemporary global political challenge from multiple competing perspectives — drawing on material from all five core units. Assessed through the HL essay component of Paper 2. Requires sophisticated multi-perspective analysis beyond SL. HL 30% (combined with Paper 2 extended essay).
