IB English Language & Literature Tutor

Expert 1:1 online classes for IBDP HL & SL. IB English rewards students who analyse deeply and write precisely. Students can identify a metaphor but can’t explain its rhetorical effect. Every session develops textual analysis and essay technique aligned to the rubric.

What Examiners Reward

Paper 1 (Unseen Text Analysis): 2 hours to analyse an unseen literary text or non-literary text. Students must identify structural, stylistic, and linguistic features, then explain their effect on meaning and audience. Vague analysis (“This metaphor is powerful”) loses marks. Precise analysis (“The water metaphor positions the protagonist as passive, reinforcing themes of powerlessness”) scores highly.

Paper 2 (Global & Local Context Essay): 2 hours to write two essays on studied works, exploring global and local contexts. Essays must integrate critical theory, historical context, and textual evidence.

HL Paper 3 (Comparative Analysis): HL students write a further 1.5-hour comparative essay on two texts studied, exploring themes and contexts across works.
