IB MYP Mathematics — Four Assessment Criteria

MYP subjects are assessed on four criteria (A–D), each marked out of 8. Our tutors help you maximise marks on every criterion.

Criterion A
Knowing and Understanding
Max 8 marks

Selects and applies mathematics to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar situations. Demonstrates understanding of concepts, principles, and mathematical vocabulary. Applies correct mathematical notation and reasoning.

Criterion B
Investigating Patterns
Max 8 marks

Selects and applies mathematical problem-solving techniques to identify and investigate patterns. Describes patterns as general rules and verifies them. Proves or justifies general rules.

Criterion C
Communicating
Max 8 marks

Uses appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols, terminology) and representations (graphs, tables, diagrams). Organises mathematical work clearly. Moves between different representations of mathematical information.

Criterion D
Applying Mathematics in Real-Life Contexts
Max 8 marks

Identifies relevant elements of authentic real-life situations. Selects appropriate mathematical strategies and applies them accurately. Justifies whether results make sense in context and evaluates the degree of accuracy required.

IB MYP Mathematics — Questions Answered

Can’t find what you need? WhatsApp us.

What is the difference between MYP Standard and Extended Mathematics?
Standard Mathematics covers the core MYP curriculum and leads naturally toward IB Maths: Applications & Interpretation. Extended Mathematics covers additional content (more complex algebra, trigonometry, and introductory calculus/complex numbers) and provides a stronger foundation for IB Maths: Analysis & Approaches. The choice should be made in MYP 3–4 with university and DP plans in mind.
What is Criterion B (Investigating Patterns) in MYP Mathematics?
Criterion B tasks give students a mathematical pattern or scenario and ask them to: find and describe a pattern, write it as a general rule (conjecture), verify it with more examples, and prove or justify it. These are not routine practice questions — they require mathematical reasoning and communication. Our tutors teach a systematic approach to pattern investigation tasks that consistently scores at the top descriptors.
How is MYP Mathematics eAssessment structured?
The MYP 5 Mathematics eAssessment has two papers: Paper 1 (non-calculator, 1h) and Paper 2 (calculator allowed, 1h30m). Both papers test all four criteria. Questions range from short-answer calculation to multi-step problem-solving and extended investigation tasks. Our tutors run timed practice sessions for both papers using released and practice questions.
How does MYP Mathematics prepare me for IBDP Mathematics?
MYP Mathematics directly builds the algebraic, geometric, and statistical foundations for both DP Maths AA and AI. Extended MYP students are well-positioned for DP Maths AA SL or HL. Standard MYP students typically progress to DP Maths AI. The MYP investigation skills (Criterion B) also provide useful preparation for the DP Internal Assessment mathematical exploration.
My child is struggling with MYP Mathematics — where do we start?
We begin with a diagnostic session to pinpoint the specific gaps — whether in number fluency, algebraic manipulation, geometric reasoning, or a combination. Many students who struggle with later MYP content have one or two foundational gaps from earlier years. Our tutors identify and fill these gaps efficiently before building forward.
Can IBZENITH help with Criterion D (real-life application tasks)?
Yes — Criterion D tasks require applying mathematics to realistic contexts, justifying your method, and evaluating whether your answer makes sense. These tasks are often underestimated. Our tutors teach a systematic approach: identify relevant information, select the right mathematical tool, solve accurately, and write a clear real-world interpretation of results.
