IB Language B Assessment Breakdown

Every mark allocation, command term, and grade boundary — from examiners who’ve sat on the marking committees.

📝
Paper 1: Productive Skills — Writing
SL 25% / HL 25%

Two written tasks from a choice of text types linked to the five themes. SL: 250–400 words per task. HL: 450–600 words; one task must use a literary text type. Text types include: editorial, blog, formal letter, interview, news report, speech, review. Assessed on content, organisation, and language use. 1h30m.

📊
Paper 2: Receptive Skills — Reading & Listening
SL 50% / HL 50%

Three reading texts with short-answer, inference, and language-in-context questions. Covers all five themes. HL students answer additional questions on language use and structure (not literary analysis). Listening comprehension via audio recordings. 1h45m SL / 2h HL.

📖
Individual Oral
SL 25% / HL 25%

Stimulus-based conversation: a visual stimulus linked to one of the five themes; 3–4 minute response + 5-minute general conversation on a second theme. Assessed on communicative ability, language range, accuracy, and vocabulary. Internally assessed, externally moderated. 15 minutes total.

Which languages does IBZENITH support for IB Language B?
We offer IB Language B tutoring in French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, Italian, Russian, and other languages by arrangement. Our tutors are native or near-native speakers with IBO examiner experience. Please contact us via WhatsApp to confirm availability for your specific language.
What is the difference between IB Language B SL and HL?
SL focuses on communication across the five themes, with text types in Paper 1 ranging from 250–400 words. HL adds a literary dimension: HL students read and produce literary text types, analyse language use in Paper 2, and are expected to demonstrate greater linguistic complexity, nuance, and range. The Individual Oral requirements are the same format but HL students are expected to show more sophisticated language use.
How do I prepare for the IB Language B Individual Oral?
The IO has two parts: a 3–4 minute response to a visual stimulus linked to one of the five themes, followed by a 5-minute general conversation on a second theme. Strong performance requires: a clear opening statement about the stimulus, 2–3 thematic points with developed reasoning, and smooth conversational language. Our tutors conduct full mock oral sessions with the same stimulus format as the real exam.
What text types come up most in Language B Paper 1?
The most commonly tested SL text types are blog, formal letter, speech, and news report. HL students also encounter diary, short story, and personal essay. Each text type has specific conventions (register, format, purpose, audience) that examiners check. Our tutors drill these conventions systematically using past Paper 1 prompts and mark-scheme exemplars.
How is Language B Paper 2 different from Paper 1?
Paper 1 tests your ability to produce language (writing). Paper 2 tests your ability to receive and understand language (reading + listening). Paper 2 answers are mostly short-response, inference, and vocabulary-in-context questions. HL Paper 2 adds language-analysis questions. The reading texts are unseen and drawn from authentic sources linked to the five themes.
How quickly can I improve in IB Language B with IBZENITH?
Students typically see measurable improvement in Paper 2 scores within 4–6 sessions, as reading and listening strategies are learnable quickly with the right approach. Productive skills (Paper 1) improve over 8–12 sessions as writing fluency and text-type accuracy develop. Oral fluency takes consistent practice — we build this through regular speaking sessions with real-time feedback.
