IB History Tutoring — Questions Answered

How do I analyse sources in IB History Paper 1?
Paper 1 source analysis requires you to assess origin (who created it, when, where), purpose (why it was created), and then evaluate its value and limitation as a historical source. You must cite specific content, name the source explicitly, and judge reliability in context — not just describe it. Our examiners drill OPCVL until it becomes second nature, including the distinction between a document’s stated purpose and its practical usefulness to a historian.
What topics should I choose for Paper 2?
The most popular combination is Authoritarian States and Causes and Effects of 20th Century Wars — both have abundant historiography, well-defined essay traditions, and strong support from past papers. The Cold War is another excellent choice. However, the right topics depend on your school’s teaching. We support all 12 World History topics with tailored past-paper sets for each.
How do I write a top-mark IB History essay?
High-scoring essays lead with a clear, arguable thesis, then deploy precise factual evidence as support — not narration. Each paragraph maintains the thread back to the question. Top-mark answers integrate historiographical perspectives (contrasting historians’ views as evidence), sustain a single argument throughout, and close with a genuine evaluative conclusion. We teach this structure using real exam scripts and mark-scheme exemplars.
How is the History IA marked?
The IA is marked on three criteria: Identification and Evaluation of Sources (10), Investigation (15), and Reflection (10). The Reflection section requires critical evaluation of the methods used by historians — not just your own methods. It must show genuine engagement with historiography. Our tutors support every stage from research question scoping to final reflection.
Is IB History HL significantly harder than SL?
HL adds Paper 3 — a 2h30m exam requiring three extended essays on a regional option. It demands significantly greater depth, breadth, and historiographical knowledge than SL. The regional options (Europe, Americas, Africa & the Middle East, Asia & Oceania) require mastery of 20–30 years of political, economic, and social history. Starting HL preparation in DP1 is essential.
What is the difference between ‘evaluate’ and ‘discuss’ in IB History?
Evaluate requires an explicit judgment with weighing of evidence — you must reach a verdict and justify it. Discuss requires a balanced consideration of different perspectives without necessarily reaching a strong verdict. To what extent requires you to qualify a statement, acknowledging both supporting and limiting evidence before reaching a measured conclusion. Our tutors teach command-term responses with specific exemplars from past mark-schemes.
